Ralph Vaughan Williams

Dona nobis pacem

Stratus Chamber Orchestra and St. Martin’s Festival Singers and Chamber Choir come together for two nights only to perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’s masterpiece, Dona nobis pacem. This hauntingly beautiful composition for orchestra, choir and soloists, was a personal entreaty for peace as Europe and the world faced renewed unrest in 1936. The cantata, with text derived from the Mass, the Bible, Walt Whitman’s poetry, and the writings of John Bright (a British pacifist Quaker) is an English counterpart to Verdi’s Requiem. The evening will include two other Vaughan Williams compositions – Three Shakespeare Songs and Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis.
