Aaron Copland’s

APPALACHIAN SPRING

Ballet Ariel with Stratus Chamber Orchestra

With special permission from the Copland Fund, Ballet Ariel Director Ilena Norton has created an original classical ballet set to Aaron Copland’s enchanting and pastoral Appalachian Spring,

While influenced by various early scenarios explored by modern dance pioneer, Martha Graham, for whom the music was originally composed, Norton’s Appalachian Spring is a fresh interpretation of the music.

Norton’s distinctive choreographic and storytelling style brings new life to this Pulitzer Prize winning composition, an American classic from one of the great contemporary composers of the 20th century. Ballet Ariel will be accompanied live by Stratus Chamber Orchestra, creating an innovative, new ballet incorporating classical movement and a more storytale dramatic narrative.

Performed on pointe, Norton’s ballet includes choreography from Gregory Gonzales, whose contemporary style integrates wonderfully. Norton calls it, “an honor to follow in Martha Graham’s epic footsteps to choreograph an original version of Appalachian Spring.

Ballet Ariel will also be performing Les Sylphides, an exquisite example of romantic ballet. In fact, this one-act, non-narrative piece has been described as a “romantic reverie,” a sublimely beautiful study of the communion of mood, music and dance.

The exceptional artistry of Ballet Ariel will be on full display as a young man chances upon Les Sylphides (the sylphs) dancing on a moon lit night. Performed to Chopin’s enthralling score, Ballet Ariel’s production will feature all that is loved about romantic ballet from the long white skirts and precision pointe work to the airy, ethereal ambiance.
